Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi Size Guide Find Your Fit
Choosing the right Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) gi size is crucial for comfort, performance, and longevity. A gi that’s too tight restricts movement, while an oversized gi can be easily gripped by opponents and there are rules when it comes to competitions. This guide will walk you through why gi sizing matters, how to measure yourself properly, and how our BJJ Gi Size Guide Tool can help you find the perfect fit.
Why Choosing the Right BJJ Gi Size Matters
The right gi size affects everything - your mobility, comfort, and even whether your gi meets competition requirements and fundementally how cool you look on the mat.
Common Sizing Issues & How They Affect Performance
Many practitioners in the jiu jitsu space struggle with the following
Gis that shrink too much
Lose 5-10% of their size after washing
Inconsistent sizing across brands
An A2 in one brand may be an A3 in another
Sleeves & pant lengths are off
May not meet competition requirements
This leads to a poorly fitting gi, which in training can be okay but can be a pain for you and your training partners
Restrict mobility
making it harder to execute techniques
Give opponents an advantage
making grips easier
Feel uncomfortable
leading to distractions in training and competition
How Different Brands Vary in Size
Not all BJJ brands follow the same sizing chart. We gathered up a few examples of how some brands differ from each other.
Brand | Difference |
---|---|
Tatami | Generally in the middle |
Hyperfly | Typically smaller than the rest |
Gaidma | A little bit looser than the rest |
That's why we invented our size guide comparison tool. To help guide you to finding the best fitting gi and no gi unifroms for your jiu jitsu journey.
How to Measure Yourself for a BJJ Gi
Before choosing a gi, take accurate measurements to find the right fit. Commonly you may just need your height and weight measurements and you may need a converter to switch between units (you can select your preferred units in our size guide).
For a more accurate fit, you can also measure your wingspan, jacket length, chest, waist, leg length, and inseam and for childrens sometimes they just go by age (but that isn't the most useful) .

How our Algorithm Determines the Best Gi Size
Each uniform has attributes like height, weight, wingspan, length etc. We picked a defined set of those, converted the units and collected that data.
After you have entered your sizes, we compare your results with the min and max sizes of each brand and size for the uniform you are after. We then calculate a score based on how close your sizes are to the min and max. The more data the brand has on the size and the more data you put in, the better the results are - which are reflected in the final score.
Can You Use the Tool for All BJJ Gi and No Gi Brands?
At the moment we have included around 6 brands and cover both Gi and No Gi uniforms for mens, womens and childrens. Some brands size charts might not have enough data to make a recommendation however we are steadily adding more brands and sizes to our database.
We are racing to add more sizes to the database but the collection can be very slow and tiresome, if there is a specififc brand you would like us to focus on first please let us know.
